The dangers

Solar doesn't fail loudly. It fails quietly, for years.

Five faults cause almost every domestic solar fire we get called to. Not one of them makes a sound, trips a breaker, or shows up on your app. Every one is obvious to someone who knows where to look.

01 Most common fault

The rooftop isolator full of rainwater

It is the switch meant to make your system safe. The seals perish after about eight years, rain gets in, and it corrodes into a permanent low-grade fault, sitting in a plastic box, in the sun, on your roof. The most common thing we find, and the cheapest to put right.

02 Invisible from the ground

Connectors that were never the same brand

Two makes of MC4 connector push together happily and look identical once clipped. The contact pressure is wrong, so the joint runs hot every sunny day for a decade until it burns through. Still one of the most common shortcuts in the trade.

03 The wind does the work

DC cable clipped badly, or left slack, saws against a tile or a sharp bracket every time the wind blows. Twelve years of that wears through the insulation. Then you have live DC touching a wet roof, with nothing to trip.

04 In your loft

Inverter terminals nobody torqued

A terminal tightened by feel rather than to a torque figure loosens as it heats and cools. Loose terminal, arc, heat, scorching. Usually in a loft, packed with insulation, directly above the bedrooms.

05 Fitted years later

A battery with no fire separation

Retrofitted storage is regularly bolted into a garage or under a stairwell with no fire barrier, no ventilation clearance and no shutdown labelling. The panels were signed off years ago. The battery never was.

What we find up there

Everything that matters is in the parts you cannot see from the garden.

From the ground your array looks immaculate. It nearly always does. The faults live at the edges, where cable meets clip, where connector meets connector, where the isolator meets the weather.

Salvage service

Your installer is gone. Your system isn't.

Thousands of domestic systems were fitted by companies that no longer exist. When the installer dissolves, the workmanship warranty dies with them. If the work was done outside MCS, there was never an insurance-backed guarantee to fall back on in the first place.

That does not make the system worthless. It makes it unowned. We adopt it: inspect it, document it, make it safe, and hand you a report you can give to an insurer, a buyer's surveyor or a mortgage lender.

  • Installer dissolved or in liquidation
  • Fitted outside MCS, or MCS status unknown
  • Paperwork lost, never issued, or in a previous owner's name
  • You bought a house with solar already on it
  • Warranty refused because the original firm can't be traced

    You send the file

    Photos of the house, the inverter, the battery, and whatever paperwork survives. Five minutes on a phone. It's what lets us price the job properly instead of guessing.

  2. 02

    We review and price

    An engineer reads the file within one working day. You get a fixed price, the access equipment we'll need, and a survey date. No fee to find out.

  3. 03

    We inspect on site

    Roof connectors and clamps, DC isolators, cable routing and UV damage, inverter terminals and torque, battery enclosure and separation, earthing, bonding, labelling and shutdown procedure.

  4. 04

    You get the report

    Photographic, plain English, faults graded by urgency, fixed price to correct each one. Yours to keep, and to hand to your insurer or a buyer's surveyor.

Five minutes on your phone. That's the whole thing.

Send what you can. Missing photos or paperwork will not stop us. A system nobody has records for is exactly the kind we are built for. Anything you skip, we capture on site.

This decides what access equipment we bring. Getting it right first time keeps the price fixed.

Stand back far enough to get the roof line in. Daylight, no zoom. Straight off the phone is perfect.

The inverter is the box that hums. Loft, garage, utility room or outside wall. If you can get the label with the model number in shot, that alone tells us most of what we need.

Please don't climb. Photograph the panels from the ground or an upstairs window. Getting on the roof is our job, and we bring the equipment for it.
